The Sierra Nevada

The Sierras dwell quietly. Approach from the east and they appear deserted, too dry to support anything but rock. Come from the west, they appear the accumulation of foothills, too gradual to pay attention to. But slowly, then all at once, the highlands open into alpine garden.

Consider these a love letter to home.

The Swiss Alps

In a world where beautiful things often reside digitally in somewhat accurate form, the Swiss Alps remain defiant. They are for the eyes. A shattered lens fifteen minutes into a one-hundred-and-forty mile trek turned a photographic fools errand into something Sisyphean. I tried anyway of course, and the result is somewhat akin an alpine dream, a rough approximation of a thing impossible to grasp. At the end of the Via Alpina is written a quote from Goethe, “Tu n’as vraiment été que là où as fait le chemin à pied.”

“You have only really been where you have walked.”

The Italian Dolomites

Rougher, drier, and perhaps less known than their Swiss brethren, the Italian Dolomites are no less spectacular. Around every corner of the road lies a scene deserving of a magazine page. Thunder comes in the afternoon, and the sun shows when it wishes. Clouds gather on rocky spires reaching towards heaven, perfect fields of green stretch in the afternoon sun, and alpine inns and huttes provide respite from summer showers, hunger, and thirst. There are no bad photos to be had in the Italian Dolomites.

Iceland & More

Some favorites taken in the Canadian Rockies, The Grand Tetons, Northern Arizona, and the Icelandic Highlands. All of which I have spent not enough time to fully give them what they deserve.
